Reflecting on Scripture
Daily Devotion:
“Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. The ones along the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. And the ones on the rock are those who, when they heart the word, receive it with joy. But these have no root; they believe for awhile, and in time of testing fall away. And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature. As for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with patience.” Luke 8:11-15 ESV
Though I have a fondness for gardening, at no time had I asked myself what type of soil I most resemble. After reading today’s scripture that changed. The imagery is rich in this word from Jesus as he explained the purpose of the parables to his followers. He likens the word of God to a seed and describes how different people receive it, much like different types of soil in the garden or along a path.
If you take a minute to consider each scenario, it is simple to think of different people you know that fit into each category.
1. A hardened heart: the seed falls along the path, but is not received. Jesus says the devil comes and takes away the seed before has the chance to take root and save.
2. A shallow heart: the seed falls on rock. The word of God is recieved well, but roots never develop and faith cannot be sustained over time.
3. A divided heart: when the seed falls among many other plants that will take resources, it chokes out the growing plant. Sinful desires and pleasures of life can prevent faith from growing.
4. An honest and good heart: the good soil takes the seed and holds it fast, allowing it to grow and develop into a hearty plant. This will change, mature, and bear fruit.
Take a minute to honestly assess which one you are. If you are here reading this devotion, you probably believe the word of God already. The thing to ask yourself with honesty, is whether or not you have allowed the seed take root in your life. Have you grown your faith deep so that you can get through the trials of caregiving? Have you choked out the word with other diversions or pleasures that distract you from your faith? Have you matured enough to produce fruit? This may be the sign that it is time to have the Holy Spirit show you where you need to do some weeding and pruning. Spend time in prayer. Spend time in the Bible. Let God change your heart by showing more of his character to you. This is the best way to get through what lays ahead in caregiving, and in life.
