Reflecting on Scripture
Daily Devotion:
“Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone.” 1 Corinthians 12:4-6 ESV
Have you ever made the statement that things would be easier if everyone just thought alike? The usual reply is something like “but it would be a boring world if we were all the same.” It is important that we are not all the same. Let’s face it, groupthink doesn’t work out very well. God shows us in his word that there is actually a deeper purpose in being different from one another.
As born again believers, the Holy Spirit gives each of us gifts. Some Christians have gifts of healing, some prophecy, some discernment, etc. “To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good” (1 Cor 12:7). Though we are given different gifts, they all have the purpose of edifying the church. Our body relies on each part to fulfill its purpose so that we function as we were designed to do.
So too should it be within the caregiving home. Not everyone has the same skills or temperament for all jobs. There usually is one main caregiver and several others that are supportive through encouragement, administrative tasks, or maybe chores around the home. We should not despise one part of our family for not being gifted in the same way we are, but see them as a part of the whole that keeps things healthy.
A Prayer for Guidance
Prayer for Using Spiritual Gifts
Heavenly Father, thank you for the gifts you have given me. Help me to remember that there is not division in the body of Christ and that I am to have the same care for all. I thank you for the opportunities you give me to use my gift to bring glory to your name. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
