Reflecting on Scripture

Daily Devotion:

“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” John 8:36 ESV

There aren’t a lot of things in this world that are guaranteed, certainly not when it comes to healthcare and caregiving. Have you ever heard a doctor promise with 100% certainty the outcome of a surgery? If you did, he was foolish or incredibly arrogant. But there is something that we can have assurance in, our freedom in Christ.

During the week leading to Thanksgiving I am detailing the things for which I am most thankful. Today, it is that God sent his son as a propitiation for our sins. It is a free gift available to all if only we believe.

Often misquoted and misapplied, the phrase “and the truth will set you free” lets us know that we don’t need to be a slave to sin when we abide in the Word. Before we heard the gospel and made a decision to follow Jesus, we were slaves to sin and the law. But God in his great love for us had a plan that “all people might be saved and come to the knowledge of truth.”

If you are here and haven’t already made the decision to follow Jesus, I encourage you to pray and ask him to set you free from the burden of your sin. The gift of salvation is truly something to be thankful for today and for eternity. And that is a guarantee.

A Prayer for Guidance

Prayer for Salvation and Sanctification

Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of salvation through your son, Jesus. Help me to stay in your word so that I may be free of the enslaving power of sinful behavior. Refine me and sanctify me so that my life reflects my belief in you. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
