Reflecting on Scripture
Daily Devotion:
“My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.” 1 John 2:1 ESV
Caregiving brings out the best in us. It can also bring out the worst, if we are being honest. Fatigue, frustration, guilt and impatience can start to take over for compassion, love, and kindness. You may even find yourself thinking, “I shouldn’t behave this way…I should be stronger…I should be more patient.”
If we are to have fellowship with Christ it is important that we walk in the way of truth and light. As Christians, Jesus’ blood has cleansed us of all sin, but we must choose to keep his commandments in whatever we are doing, including caregiving. We are called to repent from our sinful ways and not live the life we had so that God’s grace will abound more.
What I find so encouraging about this scripture is that we learn that Jesus is our advocate with the Father. As an advocate for my daughter, I stood beside her, pleaded for her best care, and comforted her when she was hurting. The love in my heart and my desire for her best care, is nothing compared to the way Jesus views the people who make up the church, his bride. When we fall short of the holiness of God, Jesus is there to ensure we don’t see judgement for our sin. Choose today to honor this love by keeping God’s commandments.
A Prayer for Guidance
Prayer for Purification
Heavenly Father, thank you for the grace you give me when I sin. Purify me so that I am a better reflection of your holiness. Help me show the fruit of the Spirit as I carry out my caregiving duties. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
