Reflecting on Advent Reading 1 Kings 3: 3-14
Daily Devotion:
“Solomon loved the LORD, walking in the statutes of David his father, only he sacrificed and made offerings at the high places.” 1 Kings 3:3 ESV
At the end of his life, King David had his son Solomon anointed as the next king over Israel. Then he admonished him to keep to the ways of the LORD, walking in his statutes, his rules, his commandments and his testimonies. David knew personally how important it was to not break God’s commandments and he made certain he passed along this lesson to his son.
Solomon honored his father’s wish when he wisely asked God for an understanding mind with which to rule the country. He chose a path that was not selfish. He put aside his own desires to focus on what would equip him for leadership. God rewarded him with unparalleled discernment.
There are many times in life when we could use wisdom and discernment like Solomon. Perhaps none feel it more deeply than those who use the knowledge to serve their loved one through caregiving. The responsibility of someone’s life and health weigh heavily at times. Our decisions affect those we love and (hopefully) like Solomon we recognize our need for heavenly help.
The good news in James 1: 5 tells us “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” Though God promised no one would match Solomon in wisdom and discernment, he also won’t keep these gifts from us if we ask, believing.
A Prayer for Advent
Prayer for Wisdom and Help
Heavenly Father, thank you for the staying beside us through our trials. This Advent, help us to receive the gift you have already given in your son, Jesus, who is our wisdom, our peace, and our ever-present help. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
