Reflecting on Scripture
Daily Devotion:
“The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple; the precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes; the fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever; the rules of the LORD are true, and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb. Moreover, by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward.” Psalm 19:7-11 ESV
Like a child being scolded for grabbing a cookie before dinner, we often do not associate rules with joy. When we read about God’s laws in the Bible, what we tend to focus on is the restriction. You may even ask yourself how the Mosaic law–full of its sacrifices and commandments–can bring life?
The laws given through Moses were not random. They were a revelation of the character of God to his people who had just come out of a pagan country. He was preparing them to be His people, set apart for His glory, and able to receive His presence in the Tabernacle. This was also a shadow of the things to come once Israel was established with a Temple in Jerusalem.
While some may have seen restriction, others were convicted with godly grief when they saw just how far from holy their lives were. The Law humbled hearts and worked people into repenting of their sins.
Today, because of the sacrifice of the Lamb of God, we are not bound to the Law of Moses in the same way. The Law still shows us who we are and how much we need the Savior, Jesus. We no longer have to make sacrifices in the desert Tabernacle or the Temple in Jerusalem because Jesus’ blood covers all. Live today with the Law written on your heart, pointing you to live holy lives before our Holy God. Let the law of the LORD revive your soul and count it sweeter than honey.
A Prayer for Guidance
Prayer for Holiness
Heavenly Father, thank your law and commandments. Revive my soul with your Word and let me desire it more than gold or riches of this world. As I learn more about your holiness, bring my heart to godly grief over things that do not honor you. Guide me humility, holiness, and a deeper dependence on you. Teach me to hide your word in my heart and walk in your ways. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
